Overview:
The FOIS deiced they would do more than rebuild mechs like the Thug and deiced to create a whole new machine to compete with mechs such as the Battlemaster as well as the Atlas which put them in actual competition with other companies like defiance Industries as the new mechs performed well at its tasks as a cheaper alternatives to the other machines catching the ire of the Lyran based companies which tried to slow down or outright stop the shipments to the Inner sphere based factories from the FOIS home system just outside the boundaries of Lyran and Davion space.
After some heavy negations with house Davion allowed the shipments had resumed though with the deal that The Federated Suns armed forces would get a certain amount of the new machines a year which was in the long run cheaper than having to deal with the Lyrans.
The Mortis weighted in at eighty five tons though slightly slower than the Battlemaster it is able to bring more weapons into the fray.
The Mortis has even given the Atlas a run for its money as it has gone toe to toe with it the lighter machine has proven its worth as it had survived ninety five percent of its encounters with the massive war machine by either crippling it or destroying it.
Mainly geared towards Mercenaries and militias as it is cheaper and can be easily repaired and any weapon system is compatible with it.
Later on much like the Dragon Clan weapons seem to be just as compatible with it, however weapons such as the mmls and all other ppcs other than the Standard and ER would be seen as incompatible with the machine.
Combat:
Joey Looked around from the cockpit of his machine and was amazed at how everything looked from the cockpit and and couldn’t help but smile as he took in a deep breath as he always enjoyed that ‘fresh factory smell’ of the machines he tested for the company.
He ran through the check list for everything and noted in his verbal report anything that seemed a little off or anything that had malfunctioned during this test.
It was mainly a weapons test though this time everything is live and had to have every one that was not a target off of the massive testing ground which consisted of a complete city which had been built for combat testing in the city, large open ground with some hills, mountains, and several small lakes.
There was other testing grounds that was either in the arctic region or by the coast line where other testing would later on be taking place but for right now he was in the standard area that would lead into the urban setting.
“I am picking up a system error for the left arm actuators, mainly the left hand actuator.” Joe had reported as he figured it would be alright as the techs could figure out the problem later and since it wasn’t a critical system he would just keep an eye on it but would not cancel the live fire testing.
“Moving into combat zone now.” Joe reported as armored panels covered the cockpit’s Ferror glass that would normally allow the pilot to see outside but was deemed a ‘weak’ point and the panels would add extra protection from getting blinded by Laser strikes or a PPC that comes to close to the head.
The Cockpit was plunged into darkness other than the lights from the displays. A few seconds gentle glow of lights came online allowing him to see again.
“Note, the switch from standard operations to combat is slow.” Joe reported.
The images of the outside finely showed up and was in better detail than he could ever get from normal human eye.
“Note the field imaging system was way to slow from the system switch, fifteen seconds in all.” Joe noted on his report.
‘The techs and egg heads better fix that.’ Joe thought before moving the massive Eighty five ton machine out of the ‘garage’ as the test pilots and techs have nick named it and then headed for the first section of the field test which was against Tanks controlled by a low level AI system that would eliminate the risk of the loss of life.
The moment his mech came into range a small bore Auto Cannon shell hit his left arm doing nothing more than putting a dent in the shoulder.
“Damn the AI has gotten better.” Joe muttered.
He would have to try and close as quickly as he could or risk getting ‘plinked’ to death.
Moving at the top speed he closed the range with the Light AC carrier and moved his Cross Hairs over the enemy tank, though at just outside of the PPC’s maximum range he would do only about half of the weapon’s full damage.
He fired at the slow moving machine and carving out a small chunk of armor from the front of the tank but failing to do much more.
Five more small caliber ACs flew past him just missing his machine and was now in long range he fired his PPC again and sliced a large chunk of armor this time over the tracks of the enemy tank sending molten armor into it and jamming it which immobilized the enemy unit.
He had Chosen the 2W as the others was way to ammo dependent and had noted that in the review of the machines from a ‘pilot’ point of view.
All they had done was created second Variants of those machines and the 2W was no different.
Joe finished off the Tank before moving onto the next target which was a J. Edgar zipping past him and trying to bring its Laser into the rear of his machine.
He quickly fired his Medium AC without waiting for the computer to lock on and more by luck did he manage to hit the Hover craft along its side close to the rear and sent it spinning into the hill.
The Other Tanks he dispatched quickly and at last made it to the edge of the City where he would meet up with his lance to take on enemy mechs.
Defiance Industries had made it clear that they wanted to be part of the testing with their own machines to prove that the Mortis was not as good as they said it was.
Reluctantly the Company allowed it however they had been forced to stay in their Cargo dropship until the testing was to start.
The Atlas rounded the corner and not even trying to avoid clipping the building the Atlas pilot sent chunks of building spraying onto the street and kept going as it clearly did not expect seeing Zake’s Mortis 1W and Joe’s 2W. Joe fired his Medium Bore Auto cannon followed by his twin Particle Projection Cannons from the left and right torso sending brilliant green whips of manmade lighting slicing armor from the right torso after the AC round slammed into the enemy machine’s left torso.
Zake followed up by firing his assault cannon sending the shell into the left arm sending shards of armor in all directions as the massive enemy mech rocked as it lost well over three tons of armor across three sections of it massive body.
Joe gave gravity a little bit of help as he pushed the assault mech sending it crashing to the ground.
After crashing to the ground a battlemaster turned the corner and fired its Large Laser at Joe which slashed an angry molten scar a crossed his left torso.
Joe quickly moved as Zake fired his Auto cannon which slammed into the Battlemaster’s center torso and found the flaw in the armor and found its mark hitting the Engine and heavily damaging it causing a massive heat spike.
“Talk about heart burn” Zake said.
Joe shook his head as he heard groans from the others who shared their com channel, “Enough with the bad jokes and puns” Sandy said clearly not amused.
Zake fired his Lasers and finished off the enemy machine which toppled over and landed on the head of the Atlas crushing it.
“Um oops.” Zake said as he moved on passed him.
Joe sighed and left to find his own foe and wouldn’t be long before he came across a banshee and Joe titled his head, “A Banshee?” Joe asked as his machine was rocked by two PPC strikes which almost made him lose his balance as over a ton of armored just turned to mist or liquefied and splashed down onto the street below like blood from the wound.
“Okay.. Note unit identification failed to label the mech as a Banshee 3S.” Joe reported as all known mech variants have been loaded into the system yet it failed to ID the mech until after it was hit and the enemy mech variant finely labeled the mech.
Joe returned fire sending twin whips of manmade lighting across the short distance and scored direct hits which he quickly fired his Auto cannon which finished the job of severing its Left arm sending it to the ground.
He followed up with missiles and his quartet of Lasers all which impacted against the head blowing off armor and the lasers turned the pilot into a pink mist as the water within his body turned into steam. The mech toppled over as if it was pushed over.
Joe moved on to find the next enemy to take down…
After the match one Mortis was lost due to having it’s Gyro turned to a mass of molten metal and having it’s leg blown off at the knee.
DI however lost Seven of their eight mechs due to fatal damaged caused to vital parts of the machines being destroyed while two was lost due to pilot deaths.
Seeing so much carnage dealt by the Mortis who’s name sake was clearly earned would slowly start to show up in other units both big and small.
