Re: BTU EXCLUSIVE: "RONIN'S RAMBLINGS"

Post by Steve Ronin » Thu Aug 21, 2014 12:56 am

Hello my dear friends.

I created this blog with a three-fold purpose: to express my love for the hobby, to add hopefully interesting content to our site and put my thoughts and feelings in a semi-permanent medium.

I would hope that after 10+ years on this site, I've more than accomplished the first goal. Don't worry: I'm always finding something Battletech related to drool and rave about. Fer instance... the new plastic mini sets.

According to your reactions and feedback, I've partially succeeded in my second goal.
But talk about a Sisyphean task... :)

For my final goal: its rating of success is a bit more ... personal.
I've tried to not post when I'm feeling down or blue. That is a little harder recently, but the last thing I want to do is inflict my troubles onto your escapist hobby. Life is life. We all get it and know that no one's life is perfect roses and box cars every single day.

I found myself really missing James today, amongst others.
Some folks fell off the board or just lost interest: Lawgiver, B-1 flyer, Odysseus, etc.
But I would ask this of any who read today's missive:
touch base with me. Please. Either in the feedback thread or by a PM.

[CLOSE feels box...]
[OPEN: BATTLETECH stuff]

Just a public word of thanks to GRUD who "took one for the team" over the past weekend.
Poor guy just suffered through GENCON, and had to buy large quantities of miniatures. :D Really tho: nice of you to support the hobby and fan base. :thumleft:

If y'all haven't heard or seen pix of the new Alpha Strike lance packs and/or the Intro Set Box Reprints ... get out from under your rock!
http://www.catalystgamelabs.com/2014/06 ... nce-packs/

I've already purchased the Box Set Reprint: the minis are THE AWESOMESAUCE.
Quality of product is LIGHT YEARS beyond the original printing.
And word I've rec'd from folks who have HANDLED the minis: the lance packs share that same product quality. so...
SQUEEEEEEE!!!!

Here's an oddity I was pointed to a while ago.
I would have posted them sooner, just lost my "good ideas" folder.
*Japanese BattleTech dropships*

and I've always liked the look of VOTOMS. I could see this paired with a THUNDERBOLT.
65 tons, 5/8/5, AC-10, SRM-6, Beagle probe... ??

oh, and I think this comes direct from a MACROSS or ROBOTECH sourcebook..
A Mech transforming FROM a CRUSADER into a P-HAWK... or ejecting special armor kit, etc..

and finally. Presented without much comment? :?

I think a Mech pilot somewhere owes a tank crew some child support.

Y'all paint something.
and please.
Check in with me/us.
Thanks.

Greetings, Y'all...

So we are usually drooling over the military might of the future.
and we occasionally look back to the 19th and 20th century for military oddities.

but how about this: the Stele of the Vultures: the oldest known depiction of a military force. In this fragment, the King of Sumer rides in armored chariots, leading phalanxes of armored infantry.

Image
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stele_of_the_Vultures

*Note: no comment about Jeff making an appearance in antiquity was made. Today.*

and lest any forget the US military's own humble beginnings: First Muster, 1637.
Image

that is all I've got today.
I'm waiting on my new job to start.
Once I've a paycheck in hand, THEN I'll look into kicking off a Painting Contest.
*Note: my thought is a bare/primed mini to finished mini contest.*

anyway,
Y'all Stay Safe out there.

Hello again,
Just a quick VIDEO about the weapons of the first militia of the colonies. (1637)

*Matchlock Musket*
the English matchlock musket weighed 16 pounds and was 10 gauge.
http://youtu.be/r6YZmkxY7JA

*Armour*
The armour worn by a militia soldier was a helmet, a breastplate, a backplate and sometimes an elbow gauntlet. Some wore just a buff-coat, some wore armour without a buff-coat and some wore both.

The helmet worn by most was the three-barred pot. It is called this because there are three bars on the front of the helmet to protect the face. In modern times it has been called a lobster pot because the neck protection looks like a lobsters tail. This type of helmet was worn by both sides. Another type of helmet worn by militia looks very similar but has a single, nasal bar protecting the face that slides up and down. This is a European style of helmet and came from Holland or Germany.
Total weight of the armor was between 30-37 lbs.

a man probably felt like he weighed tons after a day of wearing and carrying all this.

anyway. just had some time to do some research today.
Y'all enjoy.

hello readers,
so I finally started another contract with the US Navy.
so far: booooring. I have to wait on the system to process my accounts so I can get permissions to actually DO anything. And as much as I WANT to declutter and organize my new office spaces: I can't. "this clutter belongs to those people" and "that clutter belongs to this organization"... augh.
*Archelogical find: a early '90s Toshiba x286 laptop.
It actually works and boots to Win95.

The majority of my 'muse' recently has been directed toward my online college work.

Philosphy: that which is, may be, but isn't.

BMIS: determined to educate another generation of Dilbert's "pointy haired boss"...

And yes, I've already got a 10 point deduction for posting the above picture on the discussion board website.

anyway. off to burn more brain cells in the pursuit of the all important lambskin.

y'all paint something.
and take care of yourselves out there.

Dear Readers!

it's HEREEEEEEEE!!!!!! :!:

Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :!:

one of my furry overlords inspected the package and gave approval to open.
Image

opened the box and what did I find... but oodles of neat stuff.
Image

Here we have my 1st Wave Rewards: Box set, poster, 2 add on boxes of Destroids, and the big bag of Battle Cry goodies.
Image

And you KNOW I had to put something together:
Image
A Tomahawk Destroid and Zentraedi Officer Gulag! Pictured with 2nd Edition box set plastics for scale comparison.
:thumleft:
The Tomahawk and the Warhammer: SPOT ON for size! YAAY!!! :!:
Image

The Officer Gulag and the Marauder. Not to scale, but still cool.
Image
Notice the Marauder wearing the rough draft of the BattleTech Universe Regiment colors?

I've got so much stuff to put together: may have to draft the Son&Heir for assembly duty.

BTW: hats off to the SF Giants for winning the World Series.
as for the KC Royals: way to bring honor to the game :thumleft:

But it's midnight and there is work tomorrow.
Stupid RL. Interferes with my hobby.

Y'all stay safe out there. And keep painting.

PSA...

Early Data Suggests Severe Flu Season

Based on early data, the 2014-2015 flu season could be severe. Protect yourself and your family against seasonal flu. Getting vaccinated and taking everyday precautions—like washing your hands, covering your cough, and staying away from sick people—are the best ways to keep yourself healthy this flu season.

1. No kidding.
2. Your flu vaccine this year is less than 50% effective.
