Ryane was going over the days’ action report in his tent. They had not faired as badly as expected against a more experienced unit. The artillery had taken destroyed about a company’s worth of enemy armour, along with a platoon of infantry. The mines completely destroyed 1 enemy mech, while severely damaging other’s that were to close when the mech’s ordinance cooked off.

His own casualties were kept to a minimum. The only mech that he had lost was that of Lt junior grade Maas, when a direct hit to the fusion engine shielding caused the auto-eject to jettison her from the mech, just before the ammo in its chest cooked off. The rest of the two companies that had been committed to the battle had taken varying degrees of damage.

Most of the damage had already been repaired by their mobile repair group. He only hoped that sending Charlie Company, which consisted mostly of his assault class mech’s to the emergency evacuation point, was not a mistake. But on the other hand they needed the dropships a lot more for evacuation than he needed Charlie Company at the moment.

At least Col Von Lighte’s personal guard, consisting of a reinforced company of assault class mechs’ was there in case he might need any assistance. He looked at the data a last time before going to the command tent to have a quick meeting with his commanders too outlay his strategy for the next day. The fighting would be getting bad because they were in the city and he wanted to keep collateral damage to a minimum.

In total the enemy casualties were a lot higher than that of his forces. The artillery made sure of that. If had not pulled his armoured units back before they engaged the enemy, he was sure the numbers would look a lot worse on his side.

“Master Sergeant Gordon, the enemy infantry is on the move. From the thermal imaging equipment, it looks like they have some inferno missile launchers with them.”

The report come in from Ghost six, they where keeping an eye on the enemy with explicit orders not to make contact. “Ghost six, can you see how many there are, and where they are going?”

“Sir, there are approximately twenty men with three launchers and they are heading is your general direction. Be warned sir, they are being escorted by two light hover tanks. Our field targeting unit suggests that one has a twin barrelled PPC turret, while the second one has a light autocannon with a double SRM tube on both sides of the turret.”

“Thanks for the heads up Ghost six.”

“Ghost four, place claymore charges on their approach path. When they are in the target zone, take them out. Concentrate specifically on the two hover tanks. The infantry we will be able to handle.”

“Will co.” was the only response that came over the radio and all that he needed to hear too know that his orders would be followed.

“Get me HQ on the line; they need to know that our enemy is on the move.”

Right, next tip and in fact it's what I do myself and hopefully it'll work for you.

When you are writing dialogue, read it out to yourself, or someone else if you can. That way you'll pick up anything that doesn't quite sound right.

Still enjoying the story.

Keep posting :D

Ryane was busy outlying his battle plan for the next day when the call came in from their spotters in the field that the enemy was on the move. He immediately ordered Lima company to go and investigate since they were the unit on standby incase something like this happened.

The commander of the unit was an old friend and also a veteran. Capt Alicia Stone was an excellent warrior and could handle any situation. It was over an hour ago that he sent them out with orders of maintaining radio silence for as long as possible.

Suddenly the earth beneath him shook with a vengeance. As he ran out of the command tent, he could see the fire in the night sky.

***********
Ghost four had been tracking the progress of the enemy APC’s and their escorts over the last three-quarters of an hour. While the tanks covered them, the APC’s dropped infantry groups with demolition charges at certain points in the city. At one point, they dropped eight soldiers with the inferno launchers. There own trap had been set and now the enemy hover tanks was a mere four hundred meters from the death zone with the APC’s in tow a good sixty meters or so behind them.

“This is Blackfox to all units, take up positions and await my orders”. The only sound over the comm circuit in Brain’s ears was the clicking sound of confirmation from his unit as they responded by depressing the PTT twice on their radios.

The lead hover tank entered the zone first, followed by the second one about two seconds later. Time too spring the trap. “Detonate charges in three, two, one” and with that he depressed his own remote detonator and watched as the tank with the autocannon took the blast from his four claymores and three satchel charges full in its portside skirt. The resulting explosion from one of his unit members flipped the tank into the air and it came down hard on the portside with sparks filling the air as the blades of the engine dug into the paving.

The other tanks crew was not so lucky. Five claymores and six satchel charges detonated beneath the tanks unprotected belly. The explosion blew the turret straight into the air as the fuel tanks in the tank detonated. The turret come down on the second hover tanks one SRM pod, which was knocked free of its mounting place by the force of the turret as it struck. The free spinning SRM pod was caught in the blast of another claymore which caused the ammo inside the pod to explode.

With one tank destroyed and the other one disabled, he ordered his men to take out the rear APC. From three stories up and approximately two hundred meters behind the enemy APC’s, he could see four brilliant flashes as SRM’s left their launch tubes. The smoke trails homed in on the rear APC.

Just before impact the rear door swung open to let the troops out. Two of the SRM’s went straight through the open hatch and detonated inside the APC while the other two missiles detonated against the body and machine-gun turret respectively. The internal explosions ripped the APC apart and send bits and peaces of vehicle and body parts flying everywhere.

The infantry in the second unit were already scrambling for cover. As he was about to order his men to fall back with the damage done, he had to watch in horror as the place were the rocket team had been being riddled by AC fire from the disabled tank. The turret clearly still worked.

As he turned his attention to the tank, range bowling inside of him, he heard the slow methodical thump of an approaching battlemech. If this was the enemy, they were in serious trouble. “Blackfox to Hounddog, can you confirm whether approaching mechs’ are friendly or not?”

“Sir the tanks and APC’s were a smoke screen, they have two companies advancing on our position, I say again, two companies. Request further orders.”

“All units, blow your remaining charges and fall back. Eagle-eye one and two provide cover from infantry attacks.”

“Roger command” come their simultaneous response.

As he gave one last look at the enemy hover tank, he heard a thunder clap. Before he could utter a word the enemy tank was smashed into the paving as a Gauss rifle slugs tore into its turret.

“Ghost four this is Blackstar, get your people out of here. We’ll keep them busy and please let HQ know what’s going on here, our radios have been jammed for long range comms.”

“Will co Blackstar, all ghost units, fall back too transports.” As he looked out the window of the shop in which he had been hiding, he saw the Zeus coming into view just before it let lose with a flight of SRM’s to decimate the remaining enemy infantry and APC.

“…sir….enemy is….move….ctor seven…..” The transmission that through was very distorted and it frustrated Rayne. Something must be done about these blasted enemy jammers, he thought, but what. They didn’t know were they had been placed, so taking them out would be a serious problem.

At least one thing was clear, the enemy was on the move. “Private, sound general quarters.” As he was turning around to join his group another radio report come in with more bad news.

“This is Nightshift, enemy moving in sectors nine and ten. Estimated enemy strength is at approximately twp companies with armour and some infantry support. Please advise command.”

Rayne grabbed the radio from the operator before he could respond. “Nightshift this is Blacknight, engage the enemy infantry at max range. Do as much damage as possible without getting yourself killed and pull out before your spotted.”

“Affirmative Blacknight, Nightshift out.” Before the end of the transmission Ryane had already left the command tent at a flat run towards his Highlander. This time the enemy would pay dearly for what they are trying to do.

He mounted the ladder two steps at a time. When he reached the cockpit he slapped the ladder retraction button on his way to the command seat. He flipped the start switch that brought the fusion engine to life and started the security activation part of the start-up sequence.

“Identify” come the first command.

“Major Rayne Black, number 4537892-alpha”

“Pilot identity confirmed, second stage password required for full system activation.”

“One step for man, one giant leap for mankind”

“Welcome aboard Blacknight, system now activating”, and with that he heard the engine roar to life. He leaned over and hit the button that sealed up his cockpit entry hatch. Before long his cooling vest was pumping fluid through it giving him goose bumps. Neuro-feedback reported fully functional. He flipped his comms switch to the command channel.

“All units this is Blacknight, Omega and Zulu companies will engage the enemy units in sector nine and ten. Fourth and Eight armoured companies will assist them. Vector company and the third armour company will enforce Lima company in sector seven. Sixth and seventh Armoured will protect the command trailer and artillery assets. All units, move out.”

And with that he set his 90 ton assault mech into motion. The earth of the park giving away under the feet of his mech. At least the anti-mech unit was one group he didn’t have to worry about.

**********************
Lt Zen stood in the open hatch of his tank, with IR field glasses pressed against his eyes. He could swear that he had seen movement amongst the top of the buildings. But there was nothing now.

As he lowered the field glasses, Capt Sung’s Demolisher pulled up next to him. The captain looked angry. “Report” was the command barked and he immediately responded.

“Sir, we detected movement on the buildings at three-zero degrees. We halted to get a better view.”

“And…”

“Nothing sir, but we can…” His words were cut short as the captains’ head exploded in a spray of blood. Before he could react he felt his own body jerk under the impact of a projectile. He dropped back into the tank like a bag of potatoes.

Something felt wrong he thought to himself, and as he looked down he saw the lower half of his right arm missing. He started to scream in pain and disbelief looking at the stump that was his right arm. He did not hear the sgt calling his name.

As he looked up, he saw the sgt coming towards him with a med-pack, just before his whole world went black.

“Sergeant, what do we do know/” asked the tanks driver in a state of panic.

He looked at the weapons specialist, “Can you trace the trajectory of these rounds?”

“No, sir.”
“Then take out every building top that the Lt was looking at.”

“Sir, yes sir.” Was the response of the gunner and with that he heard the wine of the turret motors as they started to operate followed by the slow methodical thumping of the Dervishes twin Auto cannons.

As he looked over his shoulder he could see the top of the first building being wrecked by the rounds on the gunners secondary display monitor. Whoever did this will pay.

Hi all, please let me know what you think.

********************
Nightshift had taken the two shots and left his position immediately. As he reached the eight floor of the building, he heard the rounds exploding against his previous position, four floors above him.

The enemy had reacted a lot sooner than he had anticipated. At least he had gotten two good shots of. The companies commander and most likely his second in command. Now to get some infantry scalps before he left the area for good.

They would take a while before moving again. They would know start scanning each building with thermal imaging systems; luckily he was wearing one of the new thermal body suits that would help to hide his thermal profile. The most effective camouflage a sniper could ask for.

His next location would take him about twenty minutes to reach, since it was two buildings too the right of the one he was in. There at least his cover better and the walls were a lot thinker than this buildings’ since it was forty stories high and the fact that it was the main bank of the planet.

He quickly checked on in on the rest of his team with a short command. “All unit report in.”

“Snake-eye reporting.”
“Shadow reporting.”
“Ice pick reporting.”
“Viper reporting.”

“Rat report.” There was no reply. “Has anyone seen Rat?”

“Negative.” Come a chorus of answers over the link. Then as if by answer there was a huge explosion in a building across the square. “What the hell was that?”

“This is Viper, Rat’s last known location just blew apart from the inside of the building.”

There was a period of silence and then suddenly the Rat’s voice was on the air.

“Yehoooo, eat C4 you Dracs! Sorry I didn’t respond boss, but they were within hearing distance of me. They were busy sweeping the building I was in, so I decided to leave them a little surprise.”

“You know that u are crazy as hell man, you could have blown yourself up with them!”

“Ok men, lets cut the radio chatter. Get to your next locations and report in when ready.”

“Yes sir.” Come the chorus of replies over the comm link.

He had just reached his place when the building he was in was struck by missiles. “Sir, we have incoming mech’s.”

“Ok people, prepare to take out your targets and move out immediately, don’t try a second shot.” He didn’t wait for a response; he knew that his orders would be followed.

His target was in his sights. He took careful aim, let his breath out halfway and pulled the trigger. The head of the infantry captain snapped back, he moved to the second target, took a second and pulled the trigger again. The round snapped the lieutenants’ head back as it made contact.

Then he was up and running, never looking back. As he left the floor down the emergency stairwell at the back of the building he heard the impact of missiles against the front of the building. These Dracs really wanted them dead. He had to get to the extraction point now. He just hoped that the rest of his team would be there in time.

He was half a block away when there was a sudden load crashing sound behind him. As he looked over his shoulder, he saw that the building had collapsed from the missile barrage. He put on a little extra speed. As he rounded the corner, he saw the pick vehicle waiting for them about two hundred meters up the street.

He was about a hundred meters from the vehicle when a heard a loud crack and suddenly the hover craft went up in flames as a Gauss rifle round slammed into it. He instinctively dove to his left into an open alley way. Just as he left the street, the round of an autocannon chewed up the space he had just been occupying.

He decided to break radio silence. “All units this is Nightshift, our extraction point has been compromised. We’ll meet at location zero-nine-alpha. Good luck men.”

And with that he run down the alley to get to the under ground bunker were they could link up with the anti-mech infantry unit.

Col Yung swore as the report came in that three tank commander and at least six of his infantry officers had been killed by snipers. At least their transport had been reported as destroyed. His battalions’’ armoured division was now looking at for the snipers.

“This is Fey Long, all units move ahead. Ensure that you scan all buildings with thermal imaging systems. If you are unsure of buildings contents, level it with the street.”

With that he started his own mech moving again. His scouts had reported that the enemy commanders Highlander was moving towards his location, so he was going to cut of the head of his enemies army, thus allowing him to easily crush the body. His unit had been on the move for about twenty minutes without contacts when his alarms went of indicating a missile lock on his mech.

“All units evasive action. Scout lance get me the enemy coordinates. Tiger company move on the left flank….”

His orders were cut short by a sudden barrage of enemy missile fire, followed by a PPC burst slamming into the right chest of his mech. Damn cowards, he though. Suddenly the comm circuit was a hive of activity.

“….sir, we have enemy infantry between us and they are using inferno rockets…scout lance just bought it, they run into a mine field. The enemy must have activated the mines when they were in the middle of the field. The entire plaza they were going through went up in smoke.”

Before he could respond, he had to dodge the autocannon fire of an enemy Hunchback that suddenly appeared from around the corner in front of him. The AC rounds nicked his left arm and the rest of the rounds dug into the building behind his mech.

He could have sworn that it was the same Hunchback of the previous day, had his people not salvaged it to replace some of their lost mech’s. He returned fire with his own AC and show the shells stitch a path of damage down the right arm. He followed it up with his medium lasers, which hit the already damaged armour on the arm just above the elbow joint.
The armour run down the limb and fused into place over the elbow joint, locking it into a forty-five degree angle. Suddenly a blue flash shot past him slamming into the same area were his lasers had dug a whole into the armour. The PPC burst cut through the remainder of the armour and myomer with the precision of a surgeon. The arm dropped to the ground.

The suddenly unbalanced mech stabled to the left, and he cut lose with his AC and PPC. The energy weapon was on target and slammed into the lower centre chest area. The AC rounds chewed their way from left hip to right shoulder.

The Hunchback was not silenced by the attacks, but retaliated with its AC. This time Yung reacted faster and dodged into the alley on his right. He suddenly realized that he was not the intended target of the attack as he heard the cry of agony over his tactical channel, which was followed by an explosion that sent out a shock wave shuttering all windows in the area. He checked his HUD to see which unit had been hit. His second in command’s icon was dead.

He turned all his weapons forward and moved out of the alley, ready to blast the Hunchback, but the only sine that it had been there was the arm lying on the ground. He checked his sensors, the area was clear for the moment. He turned his mech, and the site that greeted him was shocking.

His XO’s mech was in pieces. The Panther had taken the full assault of the AC in the chest. The only explanation for the vast devastation in front of him, was that the Hunchback’s AC must have breached the fusion reactor shielding in some or other way.

“All units, this is Fey Long, regroup at co-ordinates delta-five-niner.”

****************
Lieutenant senior grade West, could not believe his luck. He had though that the Atlas and Panther was surely going to finish him of. That his last shot chewed through the chest armour of the Panther was luck.

Now he was limping along as fast he could to get back to Lima companies lines. He was send out as a probe along with the rest of his lance. They each had their own work to do. He just hoped that splitting the unit up was not a bad idea.

Suddenly, a Centurion landed a hundred meters in front of him, turned and fired its AC down the street from which it had come, before launching itself into the air again for the next jump. Missiles streamed in towards it from the street. The anti-missile system build into the mech’s head, took out most of the missiles. Two however got through and slammed into the mech’s left arm.

The paper thin armour on the arm was blasted away. Just before it disappeared from sight, he could actually see the mech’s internal structure and myomer bundles. He was about to call to his second in command when he had an idea.
He brought his mech to a stop, spreading its legs wide. He also lowered the mech by flexing its knees to make as small a target as possible. He re-adjusted the fire-sequence on his trigger for longer bursts from his AC and set his lasers in the remaining arm in the centre of the crossing ahead.

This way, he would at least ensure that one of his units’ people reported on the enemy deployment. As the lead enemy mech appeared, he waited for the crosshairs to turn gold. He got tone and stubbed down on both thumb triggers. The AC roared to life, the tracer rounds stitching their way up the left side of the enemy Warhammer. His two medium lasers dug into the elbow joint of the left arm PPC. There was a bright flash and the weapons muzzle dropped to the ground.

He could not believe what he just saw, but had little time too look at his handy work as the Warhammer started to turn in his general direction. He stubbed down on the AC firing button, as it had already cycled a fresh load of ammo into its breach. The lasers was still not ready to fire.

He watched in horror as the second mech come into the street next to the Warhammer. The Marauder was enough to give any seasoned veteran a fright. The maw’s of its weapons started to glow as well as the remaining weapon of the Warhammer.

Suddenly, the Warhammer’s weapon died, and the escape module rocketed skywards. The Warhammer toppled forward. The Marauder’s weapons discharge just as a swarm of missiles engulfed it in a cloud of smoke and detonations.

The PPC’s slammed into the right leg of his mech. Red lights went on and an alarm sounded immediately. He checked his wire frame and saw that there was no armour left on the leg and that his internal structure had received severe damage. He looked out his viewport and saw the remains of the Marauder were it stood. There was almost no armour left, and the cockpit was a smoking ruin.

Through the smoke he saw a lance of mech’s approaching. His target computer identified them as friendly unit, all assault class mech’s. As the smoke started to lift, he immediately recognized the lead mech of Major Black.

“Lt, get your mech back to the plaza and have it repaired. We’ll need all mechs operational by 10h00 hours. The fighting is only going to get harder.”

“Sir, yes sir.” I only hope that my mech’s leg last all the way there. He straitened up his mech and started moving it out. Suddenly there was an alarm in his ears, his vision started to swim and before he blacked out, he saw the Major’s mech taking to the sky on its jumpjets.

Chapter 9

Orion Battlemech Production
Pinnacle
Free Rassalhague Republic
19 July 3050
07:00 Bravo

The enemy assault had been probing for weaknesses in the defence of the mech factory from 0500 hours that morning. Luckily he had left two companies on guard for the night; otherwise they might have been couth with their pants down.

Dwain was looking at the current battle report that was scrolling over his secondary monitor. It looked good so far. He had only lost two medium hover tanks that had darted out of their protection to engage enemy armour and infantry that made it past the defending mech’s.

The rest of the battalion had sustained minimal damage, mostly armour. His comm circuit crackled to life. “Iceman this is Talon, the enemy is on the move and this time the entire battalion is on the move along with armour and infantry units.”

“Copy that Talon, leave your packages in their path and fall back.”

“Affirmative Iceman, Talon out.”

He just hoped that the explosive charges would take out same of the enemy armour and infantry units. The vibro-mines he would only activate when their defence line was breached. That was a last resort. If things went seriously south, at least there was that new company of mech’s that had been completed only a week ago.

He had already given the techs orders to get them ready in case they needed the firepower of those units. That company of mechs was his Ace in the deck. He would keep them hidden until the last possible minute.

Suddenly his comm circuit crackled. “….is Talon, enemy has….. two more companies….. from five-seven-niner…..y again, a reinforced…..on way”

He could hear the firing of the hover tanks missile launcher over the last words that came through.

“Talon get the hell out of there.”
“Sir we are………” the comms line went dead.

He switched to his main comm circuit, “All commands this is Iceman, we have a reinforced enemy battalion coming in. Last report from Talon put two companies…” His words trailed of as he realized that the enemy was pulling a flanking manoeuvre. That meant that those mechs all had to be equipped with jumpjets. He was unsure of their configuration.

“Orion company and third Armour are to move to position Delta seven, we have incoming enemy with jump capable mechs. Stay clear of vibro mines in that sector, I’m arming them now.”

“Affirmative Iceman, Orion company moving out.”

“Third Armour moving out.”

“Ok people, we’re now spread thin. Use your cover as best as possible and cause as much damage. Remember, No retreat, no surrender.”

***************
John Spartan was busy with his final pre-flight check list when his comm circuit went active. “Captain, all personal are in the briefing room.”

“Thank you Sergeant, I’m on my way.” And with that he hoped out of his crafts cockpit, and sped to the briefing room. These Dracs were in for a serious surprise.

As he entered the briefing room, every last person stood at attention.
“At ease people. The plan is a simple on. From what we’ve been able to determine the enemy commander has deployed his forces at three locations. The city, the space port and the mech factories.
The latest intel report just come through indicating that a reinforced battalion is attacking the factory. That is were our main assault will take place. I’ve regrouped our existing squadrons into two fighter wings. One will be under my command; the other will be under command of Lieutenant-Commander Xavier.
My wing will be known as Revenge and Xavier’s wing will be known as Justice. Each wing has there targets already programmed into their nav computers. That is all people, good luck. Dismiss.”

With that the pilots got busy. John was on his way to the hanger bay by the time the last group of pilots left the briefing room to follow him.

Minutes later he was in his Stingray moving to the runway. “Control, Revenge Lead requesting clearance for take-off.”

“Clearance granted, and good luck sir.”

“Thank you tower, Revenge lead out.” And with that his wing went thundering down the runway. Both wings were airborne within minutes and on their way to the planet.

This time these Dracs won’t know what hit them, John thought to himself. He selected his command circuit, “All wings to maximum burn, we now go to radio silence. All IFF transmitters are to be switched off until pre-arranged co-ordinates to target areas. Good people, Revenge lead out.”

As promised, the last part of chapter 9

Major Lee had started the assault earlier than was planned and had also called in the two companies that were left at the dropships. These two commanders were loyal to his family, so it wasn’t difficult to get them to the factory for the assault.

He had rearranged the six companies under his command in such a manner that all the jump capable mech’s were in the two companies that would be assaulting the complex from the east.

His new commanders that sorted out a problem for him last night, had made sure that the men under his command would not try to commit treason or let the colonel know what was busy transpiring at the factory complex. Two other men were also executed in the same fashion when it was discovered that they also carried secure link communicators like the one that Captain Chi had carried with him.

He would take the factory complex first and then go and deal with the colonel. It was time for him to retire, whether it would be with his honour intact or not, would be the colonel’s choice. But first things first.

“All units this is Jade Dragon, move out. Dragonfly and Firefly companies, wait ten before you start your assault so that the enemy won’t have time to pull back reserves.”

“Affirmative Jade Dragon.”

Suddenly the radio channel was filled with chatter and Lee heard the concussion of explosions.

“Sir, this is Firefly lead, the enemy had a scout tank out here, we where able to destroy the tank but could not prevent it from transmitting a message. We where unable to intercept and stop the transmission.”

“All units this is Jade Dragon, move out at full speed. Dragon and Firefly companies attack in five. We need to move while we still have the surprise of the attack.”

Lee pushed his mech’s joysticks forward, urging his Zeus to move faster. He looked at his weapons display and saw that he had a green light across the board. Time to go and crush this rebellion.

The armoured battalion was first to engage the enemy units, especially the light hover tanks. Their commander reported receiving heavy fire and requested immediate mech support. Before someone could respond however his channel went silent and his icon disappeared from the secondary monitor.

The bastards. “All units, engage at will. Blow the crap out of them.”

As he cleared the forest, he was greeted by a horrifying scene. The battlefield was littered with the burning hulks of most of his light and medium armour units.

His face turned red with rage. He looked for the first target, and found one. A Stinger running back and forth along the lines, making life difficult for his infantry units. He dropped his crosshairs on the mech waited for the dot in the middle to pulse and the target reticule to turn gold. He stabbed down on his thumb firing studs, letting lose with his LRM rack and his one PPC at the same time.

The light mech was able to avoid the PPC blast, but could not avoid the flight of incoming missiles. They impacted mostly on the mechs right and centre torso. It staggered under the assault, but the pilot was able to keep it up-right.

Then the pilot did something that he could not believe, he actually fired his mech’s Large laser at the assault mech. Enraged at the pilots arrogance, he cut lose with his second PPC and send a second flight of LRM’s at the smaller mech.

He suddenly heard warnings go of in his cockpit, informing him that he had a flight of missiles inbound. He activated his AMS system which successfully dispatched the enemy missiles, but not the autocannon rounds slamming into his mech’s right shoulder.

The punishment from the slugs was severe. He lost eighty percent of the armour on his right shoulder. One more hit like that and I will lose that arm he thought. He started looking for his antagonist when he received a tight beam transmission.

“Sir, they are deploying……sssshhh……..star league……..”

“Say again Reaper, your signal is breaking up.”

There was no response from his second in command. He started moving his mech. He had found were his assailant was hiding and was going to kick his ass. As he looked at the building, the doors opened up and striding out of it was lance of Orion Battlemech’s.

This is not possible he thought. Those plans were supposed to have been destroyed. The ISF could never find it. Now the enemy has a lance of them.

He was still staring at them in amazement when his radio crackled to life.

“Jade Dragon this is Praying Mantis, we are in position to begin the attack.”

“Affirmative, you may begin the assault.”

“Affirmative Jade Dragon, Firefly and Dragonfly companies will commence attack.”

Time to make them pay for there arrogance, and with that he set his mech into a run. He quickly checked on the Stinger and saw that it would no longer be a problem.

Chapter 10

Outskirts Durango City
Orion Battlemech Production
Pinnacle
Free Rassalhague Republic
19 July 3050
08:00 Bravo

He felt the ground shaking under his mech, before he heard the detonation of the vibro-mines on the east side of the complex were the enemy was trying to gain access by making use of their jump-capable mech’s.

That’s going to hurt, Wayne though to himself. At least that would make these Dracs a little more careful of trying that route. He checked his secondary monitor and saw that all his systems were green across the board.

So for the enemy had engaged across the entire front line. His primary objective for now was to keep the Orion’s and there production plans out of enemy hands. He settled his cross-hairs over an enemy Crusader as it approached his location, he waited for tone plus two second and stubbed down on his thumb buttons.

He felt the exhilaration run through him as the AC10X autocannon cut lose. It slammed into the enemy mech‘s right hip and stitched a line across the lower chest towards the left shoulder. His LRM’s slammed into the already damaged right hip. From his left a Jean’s Centurion joined in with its own autocannon.

His rounds chewed through the weakend armour on the joint and into the hip. As the Crusader planted its right foot on the ground, the hip tore lose, driving the leg up into the mech’s lower torso. The pilot ejected from his mech second before the damaged fusion engine exploded. As he moved his Shadow Hawk out of its position, alarms went off and he heard his AMS go active.

There was no impact, as the first barrage was blasted from the air. Not waiting for the second barrage to hit him, he centred his cross-hairs on his aggressor. As the first of the missiles struck his mech, he got a positive lock , and cut with his own SRM and LRM batteries.

He could not see what the results were, as he struggled to keep his mech upright. He heard warnings blare at him. As he checked the wireframe of his mech, he saw that he only had forty percent of armour left on his mech’s right side.

One more on the right and his mech would be out of action he though. If I’m going down then I’m taking this Mauler with me, And with that he dropped his cross-hair on the enemy mech, waited for it to go gold and for the positive lock tone.

He depressed all his firing buttons. He knew that his mech had a good chance of overheating, since he had lost two heat sinks in that last attack, but he didn’t care. His autocannon slammed into the right should launcher just as the Mauler fired its right side PPC. The impact knocked the enemy mech’s aim out and the PPC burst went past him on the left.

His large laser followed the AC rounds and dug into the already damage launcher. It blew straight throw the launcher, going out the back of the launcher. The LRM’s slammed into the chest and cockpit assembly while the SRM’s slammed into the right hip and left leg.

The cockpit of the Mauler exploded in a shower of human body parts and electronic circuits. As the headless mech toppled backwards, he was rocked back in his seat by the impact of twin auto-cannons from a Juggernaut. Alarms started to scream in his cockpit at the same time the reactor warning also sounded. He slammed his down on the ejection button.

As he looked up, the enemy mech was suddenly consumed in a ball of fire as missiles exploded all over it. Suddenly he was slammed down in his seat as the rockets of the ejection mechanism kicked in. His trajectory took him back into the factory complex, away from the fighting.

From this height he could see the whole facility. Towards the east his forces had the Drac’s pinned to the canyon wall with no escape route, except for the way the come in by.

As he started to descend, he made up his mind. Flicking his arm link to the guard frequency, waiting ten seconds and then he switched it of. It was time to unveil the rest of their new toys to these Drac’s.

Here's some more on chapter 10

“Revenge lead this is Justice lead, we are ten clicks from target area. We’re beginning our attack run.”

“Acknowledge Justice, Revenge wing will commence attack run on factory complex in thirty seconds.” John then flicked his comm switch to the general frequency used by both wings.

“All craft, activate IFF transponders now and initiate attack run on target areas.” He immediately saw a string of IFF codes appearing on his HUD from his own wings fighter craft. Now at least our AA-guns on the ground will leave us alone he though.

“Revenge wings, commence attack pattern delta-zigma-five.” As he gave the command he pulled his fighter into a steep bank to the right to get himself aligned with his first target, an Atlas that had just emerged from the cover of the forest. “Flight’s two and three, follow my vector.”

In less than three seconds he had a positive lock on the Atlas and stubbed his finger down on the firing button. Lightning shot from the nose of his Stingray as his crafts PPC and large laser discharged into the Atlas.

He was past the target and already started banking for his next vectored attack run before he could see what his shots had done. The PPC slammed into the right arm of the Atlas, blasting armour from the joint at the elbow, while the large laser stabbed through the hole made by the PPC blast, slicing through moymor muscle with the precision of a surgeon’s scalpel. The arm dropped to the side, completely useless.

His wingman’s shots slammed into the centre chest area. As he started to level out for his next pass on the Atlas, the mech’s chest swelled and then exploded outwards. The shear force of the explosion through the assault mech backwards. As John witnessed the destruction of the giant war machine, he never saw the pilot eject.

He had no time to wander why the pilot did not eject, as his radio crackled to life.
“Revenge lead, break right.” He did this by instinct. As he did so he saw the trace of autocannon fire plawing through the air he had just occupied.

His wingman was unable to completely avoid the fire. The AC rounds slammed into his craft’s fuselage and starboard wing. The craft gave a wobble and continued on course.
“Revenge two what is your status?”

“Lead this is two, all systems still operational. I lost some armour and one heatsink.”

Thank the heavens that no critical systems was hit, he thought, as he was getting tired of the idea of his wingmen been blown away. “Flight’s one through three, prepare for next run.” And with that they set out on their next attack run.

****************************************************

Lee had just down another enemy mech, when his alarms went off and the radio crackled to life. “Incoming enemy fighters!”

He stabbed the radio button that was programmed for his mobile AA assets. “This is Jade Dragon, we need air cover now.”

“Affirmative Jade Dragon, fly-swatters are moving out. ETA 2 minutes.”

With that done, he focused on the job at hand. These rebels need to be stopped, he thought. His mech staggered under the impact of several autocannon rounds. His wire-frame showed him that he had thirty percent armour left on the right and centre chest area.

He knew that one more hit like that would be sufficient to punch through the remaining armour. He sent out a signal for the rest of his company to attack the Hunchback, Crusader, Shadow Hawk and Battlemaster.

Time to take some drastic measures. His lance would focus on the Crusader. He got a positive target lock and fired both his PPC’s for good effect this time. No more playing around, he thought to himself. The blue bolts of man-made lightning slammed in the lower chest area of the Crusader.

Lee could have sworn that he saw the mech double over at the waist, like a man being punched in the stomach. The enemy mech retaliated with its full arsenal of weapons, but he was not the target. His lances second was hit by an onslaught of laser, missile and machine gun fire.

The Crusader’s lance mates joint in the assault. But it was little to late. From his left he saw two more PPC burst head for the Crusader, along with tracer round from an autocannon. The PPC burst blasted away at the same spot were his shots had hit the mech, followed seconds later by red hot depleted uranium rounds.

This time, it was not his imagination. The Crusader’s upper body started tilting forward. Suddenly the faceplate of the mech’s head blew open and he saw the pilot’s ejection seat sailing into the air. Unfortunate for him, his trajectory took straight into the path of a PPC burst. There was a bright flash as the particle beam made contact, and then nothing.

The remainder of the enemy lance cut lose on the Marauder with a vengeance like he had not seen for long. The mech was consumed in a ball of fire and smoke. When it cleared, there was very little left of the feared assault mech.

Suddenly the earth around him was thrown into the air, and he heard the warning to late. The fire from the enemy fighter craft riddled the left side of his mech. It shook as though in the hands of an agree child. His wireframe went from green to yellow to red in places so quick he didn’t even see the yellow.

His mech’s left arm was grey, indicating to him that it had been completely destroyed in that run.

“Fly-swatter, were the hell are you?”

His enraged question was answered by fighters suddenly braking of their attack runs, as the air was suddenly filled with tracer round.

“Sorry for taking so long Jade Dragon, we got delayed with some minor problems.”

“He’ll discus it later, just keep those damn fighters of our backs.”

“Affirmative Jade Dragon, Fly-swatter out.”

I’ll have to do something about these damn armoured personal, he though to himself. They are way too arrogant.

Lee did not have time to utter his words as his world was plunged into darkness before he could say anything about what he saw emerging from the centre of the factory complex.

here is the last part of chapter 10

“All units this is Hellrazer, Jade dragon is down, we need medivac immediately at co-ordinates seven-five-niner-delta-four.”

“Hellrazer, this is Life-boy, will be at your location in two minutes.”

“You’d better get here quicker, we are under heavy fire from the enemy. They have mech’s………, hurry up, I don’t know how long we can hold them off.”

“Affirmative, moving at best possible speed.

Captain Chong had seen his commanders’ mech take hits from multiple Guassrifle rounds. The shear force of the impact had picked up his Zeus and thrown it backwards. The impact it had made with the ground finished the job started by the Gauss rifle rounds. The mech had been ripped in two, the only thing keeping it together were a few strands of myomor.

He again looked at his tactical readout, and could not believe what he saw. The tanks that had caused this damage were sporting twin rail gun turrets. Where the hell did they get those units he thought to himself?

He flicked his comms to the general frequency. “All surviving units, this is Hellrazer, fall back to location delta-zero-five-mike and await further instructions.”

He knew that his orders would be followed without question, even those two shadow cats that were under the employment of Lee’s family would follow his orders know that the major was unconscious.

As the units started to withdraw, his company formed a defence line around the major downed mech. They would wait for the medivac unit to extract the major before falling back themselves.

He looked at his HUD and saw that that the medivac hover craft had arrived at the major’s mech, along with a group from the engineering corpse to cut open the cockpit. Before he could order them to work fast, his heard warning alarms and braced for impact.

His mech’s AMS system kicked in and took down the first flight of LRM missiles, but could do noting about the autocannon round or laser fire peppering his mech. His wireframe went from green to red in several places before he could blink his eyes. His targeting computer identified the assault platforms as being a Bombardier and what looked like an Orion class mech.

The problem was that this mech packed a lot more firepower than the original design. Suddenly his battle-computer gave it a positive identification as an Orion Prime MK II.

But that is impossible, those plans were supposed to have been lost when the SLDF left the Inner Sphere with General Kerensky during the exodus. Where did they get the design plans for that he thought? Before he could wander any more about where they got the plans, his radio crackled to life.

“Hellrazer this is Life-Boy, package is secure. We are falling back.”

“Confirmed Life-boy.” He flicked his comms channel to their general tac freq. “All units this is Hellrazer, package is secure. Fall back, Backdoor standby to close the door.”

“Affirmative Hellrazer. You have zero-two minutes and counting.”
As his company crossed the line held by Backdoor, he checked his tactical display and saw that he had lost three mech’s and their pilots during the retreat.

“Close the door.”

He suddenly heard the explosion as the demolition squad closed the access points to the forest behind his retreating battalion. He needed to get repairs done as soon as possible, and get the remaining two companies at the spaceport to join them for the assault. The factory complex would be his, for those plans would bring great honour to him and his family.

here's first part of chapter 11

Chapter 11

Durango City
Field HQ Home Defence
Pinnacle
Free Rassalhague Republic
19 July 3050
15:00 Bravo

The engagement with the enemy had been sporadic throughout the course of the day. It was as though they had been looking for weaknesses in the defences of the city. The problem was, that if the Drac’s took the fort, they would be in serious trouble since all of their comm systems as well as satellite systems run through the facility.

Rayne was now studying the days attack pattern, hoping to figure out what these damn Drac’s were up to. He was in the middle of a battle report when he heard a light step on the steps outside the command tent.

“Evening Alicia, nice work in the field today.”

“Thanks Rayne, I’m not even surprised that you knew it was me. How does things look, can you see any logic or pattern to these damn scatter attacks?”

“No not yet, but one thing is certain.” He looked at her before he spoke, “They are definitely after the fort. The thing that worries me the most is that the scouts have only been able to give reports on three of the enemy battalions. They can’t seem to find the fourth battalion.”

Alicia gave Ryane a puzzled look.

He knew that look and answered her before she could voice the question. “Our satellites were able to see them from orbit as they deployed from there ships. A total of four battalions worth of mech’s deployed, and now our scouts are only able to detect three.”
He pointed towards the holo-map and continued his debriefing, “One full battalion plus a company of armour is attacking the city, while one battalion plus two companies and armour is attacking the factory complex. That leaves one company at the spaceport and one entire battalion missing.”

“Can’t we use the satellites to try and locate them?” asked Alicia.

“We tried to do that about two hours ago, but the enemy aerospace fighter’s took out the satellite that was in position at that moment. The next one will only be in place in another five hours.”

“I see the problem, and these damn hills also prevent our radar systems from picking them up.” She said as she indicated a line of hills to the South-east of the city.

Rayne suddenly looked at her in amazement. “That’s it.” he exclaimed, “They are using the hills to bypass our radar systems and come at us from behind. Alicia, you’re a genius. Private Ace, get me Nightshift on the con.”

“Yes sir.” Come the response.

He looked at Alicia, “Who’s your best scout?”

She looked at him and smiled broadly, “Jackrabbit, he can also do what you are planning to do. He also has the best scout mech for the job.”

“Excellent, go inform your pilot of his task. I will give him co-ordinates to pick up Nightshift and his team once we’ve made contact with them.”

“Sir, I have Nightshift on the con.”

With that Alicia left the tent at a run. Rayne walked to the comms operator and took the headset that he offered him. “Nightshift, this is Blacknight. I have a special op for you and your team if you feel up for it.”

“Always ready for a challenge sir, what can we do for you?”

“We have a missing enemy battalion of mech’s plus armour and I want you to find them for me. We suspect that they are south-east of the city in the hills. Their fighters took out the satellite we wanted to use and the next one is only available in five hours.”

“You don’t need to say more sir, we just need a new ride.”

“That has been arranged, where can your ride pick you up?”

“At grid location five-niner-alpha-zulu sir.”
“I’ll transmit your co-ordinates to your ride, his call sign is Jackrabbit. Use tac-comm 3 to contact him.”

“Wilco sir. Nightshift out.”

“Ace give these co-ordinates to Jackrabbit.”

“Sir, yes sir.”

Rayne dropped the headsets on the table next to the comm station. Well at least that has been taken care of he thought to himself. Time to prepare some surprises for them, just in case they decide to attack us from that direction.

Here's some more on chapter 11

“Major Allard we have reached our target co-ordinates.”

This come in from his second in command. Capt Fu had opted to be a scout mech pilot from the day she joined the unit. Along with the rest of her company, she had scouted ahead of the rest of Sleeping Dragon battalion.

Her mission was to ensure that their camp site for the night had a proper parameter and that no enemy would be able to locate their position until it was too late. The Col was a genius for thinking up this plan he thought to himself.

She was one of the best light mech pilot’s that he had seen in his entire military career. She preferred to pilot a Raven with all its EW capabilities; which made it the ideal mech for scouting mission.

“Mosquito this is Blackice, we will be there is approximately ten minutes. Secure the area and place tremblers as required.”

“Affirmative Blackice, Mosquito out.” And with that she severed the comms link.

He again looked at the changes that had been made to his battalion before they left for this mission. His battalion consisted of one scout company, two medium companies and one heavy company. The only assault mech’s in his entire battalion was that of his command lance.

The Col had thought it better to commit the assault class mechs to attacking the factory complex. What an idiot, there was still one entire company of unknown composition of the enemy that had not made contact with any of their forces. If that company consisted of assault class and heavy mech’s, that could cuase serious problems for him and his men.

He shook himself out of reverie, he had to focus on the mission at hand, and stop worrying about what awaited him in the city. He looked at his tac map and saw that they were coming up on their camp site for the night. Finally he would be able get out of his mech and stretch his legs. He flicked the switch that selected his command frequency.

“All units this is Blackice, co-ordinates reached. Spread out beneath the trees before powering down, we don’t want make ourselves easy targets to any aerospace fighters.”

With that he killed the link and followed his own instruction. He found a huge old oak tree underneath which he could park his ride for the night. As he descended the chain ladder from his Warhammer’s cockpit, he saw Capt Fu already waiting for him.

As he stepped of his mech, she handed him a cup of hot coffee. “Sir, the tremblers have been deployed as you requested. If any enemy mech’s come close by we will now about them long before they’ll know about us.”

“Good work Capt, get the command staff to the command trailer asap, we need to go over our battle plan for tomorrow.”

“Sir yes sir”, she snapped a salute at him and was of at a run before he could return the salute. He looked after her in amazement. She never seems to have a lack of energy in her, he thought to himself. He took one more look at his Hammer, and entered the command trailer. The comms tech already had the holo map up and running. He settled himself behind the keyboard, put down his coffee and started typing in commands.

His plan was already in his head, and he wanted it ready by the time the rest of the command staff arrived. This was going to be an interesting debate as always, especially since they didn’t have any fighter’s to give air cover.

**************************************
Xavier was busy helping the tech’s repair their damaged fighter’s when John Spartan’s squadron landed. They had met heavy resistance from the enemy aero fighters on their way to the spaceport.

The were able to destroy the group that had taken out the satellite, but in tern he had lost two fighters and their pilot’s and three were severely damaged. These were the ones that they were now working on. He left the tech’s and started walking over to were John had just parked his Stingray. The fighter looked in better condition than his own craft.

“How did your mission go John?” he asked as John’s feet hit the ground.

“Went well, I lost one craft. Luckily the pilot ejected over the factory complex, so the ground pounders were able to rescue him. We took down a couple of mech’s before the enemy AAA batteries started harassing us. What about you?” he said as he handed his helmet and gloves to the flight marshal.

“Not so well I’m afraid. I lost two pilots before we were able to enter the atmosphere. He run into some Drac fighter’s that was taking out our satellites, so we decided to take them out. Before the last one was destroyed he got of a message to his buddies on the ground. They were waiting for us when we arrived at our target. I called off the engagement when three aircraft took crippling damage during our run in. The rest of us suffered varying degrees of damage.”

“Lets go and get some grubbed, then me and my boys and girls will help you and yours to get your aircraft back into fighting shape.”

“Sound like a good idea John.”

“Pleasure is all mine old friend.”

Last part of chapter 11

Col Yung was going over the day’s battle reports. He had lost three tank commander, one armoured battalion commander and his XO as well as two elite infantry units with the armoured support. To top it all, the enemy command lance had blasted two lances into oblivion, without taking any serious damage themselves.

Some good news at least was that Major Allard had sent his message little over an hour ago that they were in position and were prepared to pull of operation backstab. His fighter’s had also suffered a loss when they run into some aero space fighter’s of Pinnacle in orbit while they were taking care of some satellite problems. He looked at the status of his mech and armoured battalions’. Mech’s were at eighty-one percent strength and armour at seventy percent after the day action.

At least he had not lost any more heavy tanks. He was toying with the idea of recalling one of the jump capable companies that had been sent to the factory complex. They could make for a nice surprise, but then the factory complex was more important, especially after the reports that he had received of what had emerged from the complex.

He wondered were in heavens name they had gotten some of those things. At least one problem had been taken care of for now by those heavy tanks. Major Lee would not be a problem, and after this campaign was over, he would bring him up on charges of high treason. At least Hellrazer he knew was loyal to him.

There was a tap at the door.

“Enter” he growled without looking up.

He waited until all his commanders where seated before he began his briefing.

He flicked a switch on the holo tank, and a map of the city appeared with red icons indicating expected enemy positions, while the blue icon represented their own forces. “Gentlemen, this is our current knowledge of enemy locations. The attacks launched today were aimed at testing the enemies resolve. We now know that they are scattered fairly thin, so we will be making drives at them from three directions to attract their attention. Thirty minutes after we engage them in combat, Sleeping Dragon will attack from the south-east. This will forces them split their forces to defend against that attack or have their backs exposed. Hopefully they will not detect Sleeping Dragons approach. When the trap is sprung, Sleeping Dragon will head straight for the Fort and their communication and command facilities. Once these are taken, the rest of the planet should be a cake-walk.”

He then started to outline his strategies, and his commanders started to argue who would be assaulting from which direction and what would be the best method to engage the enemy. The discussions went late into the evening, when he finally dismissed them, they left the command trailer still arguing about what the best attack would be.

*************************************
While Col Yung and Major Allard were confident that the enemy knew nothing of Sleeping Dragon, Nightshift and his squad was looking down at the enemies encampment. Just as well that they had left Jackrabbit six clicks east of their current location, for the enemy had deployed trembler devices a few minutes after they had arrived at the location.

These Dracs were taking it easy, he had not been able to detect any thermal sensors or other devices that would cause him and his men any problems. They had decided to wait until most of the enemy had gone to bed before they would go in and sabotage some of the equipment. Although the effects would only come into play at a later stage.

He had picked his two mech’s as they arrived at the camp site. His first target was a Stalker with its Arrow XI missiles and targeting system, the other was a Warhammer. He had some explosives that he wanted to plant in the Stalkers’ ammo storage bin and then he wanted to have some fun with electronics and the Hammer’s targeting system as well as the two PPC’s.

The rest of his team started to signal that they were in position. He waited thirty more minutes, then he gave they command to move out by clicking his PTT three times waiting for two and then three times again.

He moved the minute he let go of his PTT. His orders were simple, get in, sabotage your targets and get out. They didn’t have time to fool around and neither could they afford to be caught. There body armour stood no chance against any enemy mech’s weapons. He quickly reached his first target, planted his charges, set the timer and moved on to the next target. He was busy finishing up on his last job when all hell broke lose. He heard gun fire first then the alarm went off. He quickly finished his work and left his charge. He moved quickly and quietly through the dense underbrush.

When he was close enough to the firefight, he switched his visor to IR mode. He immediately knew who was responsible. Breaking his own orders, he broke radio silence, “Rat were in blue blazes are you and what have you done?”

These was static, then a weak reply, “…..sorry chief, walked into a bear….finished with second job……badly hurt…”

“Stay put, we’re coming to get you. What’s your co-ordinates?”

“……Six-seven-five-east…”

“We’re on our way Rat, sit tight. Viper, Ice pick with me. Snake-eye and Shadow get to Jackrabbit and have him bring his unit closer. Disable all trembler devices along the way without trigger their tamper alarms.”

“Sir yes sir” come a chorus of responses. With that he headed for Rat’s location. What he found when he got there was not a pretty sight. Rat’s left leg had been torn open from knee to ankle and his right arm was busted. He actually felt sorry for the man. As he started to quickly cover the wounds in an adhesive foam that would help slow the bleeding, Viper and Ice pick arrived. They quickly build a travis that could be carried between them, lifted the injured man onto it and set of to meet up with their ride.

They were almost to the co-ordinates given to them by Viper when the camps alarm went of. “This is Snake-eye, the enemy has discovered that the tremblers have been tampered with Nightshift.”

“Were are you Snake-eye, give me your co-ordinates so that we can come pick you up.”

“Negative sir, get out of here. The enemy mech’s are mobilising and Rat requires medical attention. I’ll keep them busy for a while, then fade…..now get moving!”

They could hear the sound of his sniper rifle as it started to pick at targets. “You heard the man Jackrabbit, lets move.”

He switched to a private channel, “Snake-eye, you’d better make it out of this one alive you hear.”

“Don’t I always Captain. You owe me a beer when this is done.”

“Get back to base and I’ll buy you a crate of beer’s you crazy idiot.”

“Your on boss.” And with that the comms line went dead as the enemy started to jam all communication systems in the area. You’d better get out of this alive little brother or mom is going to kill me.

here's the next chapter and the twist

Chapter 12

Pinnacle System Space control centre
PHDF Command
Pinnacle
Free Rassalhague Republic
20 July 3050
05:30 Bravo

Rita Jennings was on the first shift for the new week, after finishing her graveyard shift the previous day. She was busy going through the night reports of the enemy Jumpship activities, when the alarm went of indicating another Jumpship jumping into the Pinnacle system at the Nadir jump point.

She immediately silenced the alarm, and waited for the streams of data coming in from the new arrival. The system then did something it never had done before. It suddenly started going though the war book on naval craft searching for what she knew not.

She was astonished by what she saw. The computer identified the new arrival as a Cameron Class warship. Confused and scared at the same time, she remembered the stories her great grandfather had told her of what these vessels were capable of.

She flicked the switch that activated the comms link to the col’s quarters.

************
Col Von Lighte had heard the siren and was halfway dressed when his rooms comms link beeped at him.

“Comms only” was his command to the unit as it activated. “This is Col Von Lighte, go ahead.”

“Sir this is Jennings, your presence is required in the control room immediately.”

“I’ll be there in five Private. Lighte out.” And with that the link was terminated.

He wondered what was going on, for he was certain that he heard fear in the young woman’s voice. This caused him to hasten his pace. He arrived at the control room with one minute to spare. As he entered he froze in place when he saw the reason for the private’s apparent fear.

What appeared on the main view screen was supposed to have been destroyed by the years of Succession wars. The last of those left with General Kerensky when he led the SLDF out of the Inner Sphere over three centuries ago. He looked around the control room and saw the same expression on all his staff’s faces.

“Private, have we had any comms from the ship since its arrival?”

Before Rita could answer, the main view screen changed from the ship to the face of a man in military dress uniform, one he did not recognise.

“I am Star Colonel Tielc Kerensky of the Clan Wolf; with what forces do you defend this planet?”

Col von Lighte looked in amazement at the man. He recovered quickly though and indicated the comms tech to activate the comms links.

“I’m Col Von Lighte, what’s the meaning of this, have you Drac’s now gone completely nuts by calling yourselves Clan Wolf?”

The man on the screen took apparent insult from the statement as he replied;
“We are not Drac’s, we are of the Clan Wolf, I ask again with what forces do you defend this planet?”

“Screw you, I’m not telling you anything. You can wait in line for your turn to invade us then if you’re not Drac’s.”

“Very well Col, you will then face the full fury of Wolves. “and with that the screen went dead. The Col was still fuming about the man’s arrogance. How can you attack a planet and not know the enemies composition he thought to himself.

“Corporal, get me Major Black on the line.” The comms tech acknowledged his commander with a quick nod and a flurry of motion as he established a secure comms link to the field HQ.

“Sir, I have Major Black on the line.”

He took the offered head set from the corporal, settled it over his ears and indicated to the comms tech that he was ready, who flicked a switch that connected him directly via laser comms to Major Black.

“Major Black this is Ulrich, I’m afraid that we I have more bad news. Another invading horde calling themselves Clan Wolf just arrived in system and issued a challenge for the planet. I told them to get in line and that answer did not appear to suite them very well.”

“Sir, do know what their strength is?”

“No, I told him he was crazy if he thought that I was going to tell him what forces I have at my command. Why are you asking Rayne?”

“Sir, if I may be so bold, what if we tell them and then have them land behind the Drac’s coming in from the south-east. That way we can let two enemy forces hammer each other and then we can deal with what remains.”

“Not a bad idea Ryane, and you where wondering if I made the right choice promoting you to Major. I’ll see if I can get them on the comm. Good luck out there today and God speed.”

“Thank you sir, Rayne out.”

Ulrich stood silent for a while, trapped in his own thoughts. He come to a sudden conclusion to implement Rayne’s plane. “Corporal, see if you can get Star Colonel Tielc on the line. We have a battle to discuss.”
