Feeling that AoE1 was a little too difficult, I moved on to AoE2. With its advanced commands and more advanced AI (both on the computer and player sides) I had an easier time. The training campaign was a blast. The Scottish campaign against the British during the middle ages. After completing the training campaign, I installed the expansion, which gave me access to several single scenario games that covered famous battles of the Castle Age and a handful of new civilizations - the Huns, Mongols, etc. I played El Cid, a magnificent general of ancient Spain, in my next campaign. I also completed nearly all of the single scenario battles that came with the expansion.
A week or so ago, I picked up AoE3...the colonlial age. Wow...I've yet to buy a game that looks this detailed. The naval battles are so well depicted that it causes my 2.8GHz, 512MB system to somewhat lag, even with all the graphics options on their lowest settings. No problem, just build a super-powered navy and send them to the enemy's shores without watching the battle. Though it's a little too much for my system to handle at one time, it's one of the best RTS games I've ever played. When I finally get an internet connection on my own PC, I'll update my graphics drivers and buy the expansion.
It's not often that I praise Microsoft for doing something right, but some of their games are really worth the cost. The Age of Empires series is one of them and should be at the top of your RTS list...along with MechCommander, of course.
