I'm afraid that will have to be the case. We are keeping this limited to actual sculptors, designers, writers, artists and painters.

It is cool having your name in print though! 8)

Hmm...I have and idea, maybe you can create 2 levels of ribons, 1st grade to:"actual sculptors, designers, writers, artists and painters" and 2nd grade to "canon" credited BTU members, like Sarge.

The Mech could be gold for 1st grade and silver for 2nd grade, etc...

Just an idea, what do you think John?

That is an idea and not a bad one but I think we need make sure to get the first one up and going then think about the second one.

Also, what would the criteria for 2nd Grade be? Playtester? Fact checker? Mention in a book or novel? Character inclusion? All of the above?

I think we should just keep it at the one level. I am not trying to take away from other ffolkes, but the idea is to acknowledge canon contributors. It is easier to verify the works of canon artists and writers than it is to verify playtesters, factcheckers, and others.

Whoa, I think someplace just froze over!

Truth be told, I am too unless we have some way to make sure that the person nominated for a 2nd Grade ribbon, if we decide to do it, has done what they say they have.

I wanted to hear what shalom itay had in mind before I jumped on any "bandwagon", still do. However, I think we need to make sure the other is up and running first.

OK so how many authors and artists actually post here?

We're still trying to get the ribbons fully active. I've done all the work I can.... Only Odysseus knows the inner workings of the ribbons system. I''ve passed on the the required info to him. I'm keeping tabs on it for progress.

And hear you shall.
(on a side note: It is nice to hear that one's opinion is valued by respected members of this site).

Well, as I see it there should be no difference in identifying nominations
for 2nd and 1st grade honors. The system should be the same for both.

IMO, 1st grade should be awarded to BTU members that their work helped bring money to the CBT franchise. By doing so they are driving the product
and "keeping it alive".
Examples are:
1.Sculpting a mini for IWM to mass produce.
2.Writing text for a new Catalyt's TRO.
3.Painting a mini that will appear in a new rule-book, etc..
The question if the honor should be granted to people that get pay
for doing this is another matter, but IMO is yes (they probably dont get much).

2nd grade is for the "gray area" as some see it.
It should be given to BTU members that were mentioned in print.
For example "Special Thanks" on page 4 of FM:UPDATES.

I really cant see a reason not to honor people that helped push the
product, may it be a more visual contribution (1st) or a concealed one (2nd), if the franchisee acknowledged them, why not BTU?

Now let me rise another issue,
I dont know if BTU is the first site to give this type of ribons,
but whatever we decide will set a benchmark for other sites in the future.
I dont think we should be seen as the ones that disposed people of their
contribution to the world of CBT.

I don't normally contribute to these deeper discusions but...
I have to agree with shalom itay. If a person has contributed in one way or another to the furtherment of Battletech, they should be given the credit due. I have been following Battletech since it's conception, and a lot of contributors have fell by the wayside over the years because they felt overlooked and uninportant.
An acknowlegement by a fan based site such as this will show that the contribution is appreciated and could help to increase input and further the development and life the product.

Is the criteria for getting one of these entirely based on BC content. Or could you get one from something you manage to produce here on BTU?

It for cannon things -- if your stuff is on commospecs, you would get a ribbion. If your write something for an offical sourcebook, you would get a ribbion. If you get a story accepted by BC, you would get a ribbion. What'as at issue is what are the requirements for less clear things -- does getting mentioned as a playtester or a contributor count? Do Fan products count? We'll still hashing that out, though maybe a seperate ribbion for fan-based products might be in order....

Since that is the case, the bolded word should be excised from the description of Canon Contributor:Fiction

"Fan Fiction that is published on BattleCorps is also eligible for this award."

Ffolkes,, this award is an accolade for the person who is recognized singularly by publishers through printed and electronic media.

Example: John has won a Hugo award. His proofreader, illustrator, editor, copy editor, publicist, information contributor, typesetter, press operator, publication distributor and UPS delivery man who drops the manuscript off at his door to proof and revise (actually it is all electronic now), and John's wife who put up with his writer's block for months until she got fed up up and told him, "Just have the Hero whack the bad guy with tongue depressors!"... none of these wonderful people, except John, won the Hugo.

Not to take anything away from ffolkes, but the idea for this award is to make it unique. If everyone gets it, it is no longer unique.

.........just my 2 cents, and a little bit of advice from my wife, who is in the biz.

For example, the dropship I built for Catalyst Games' GenCon 2007 appearance was really ginchy and even made it to the back cover of Strategic Ops.

But does that mean I rate a ribbon? No. It does not directly contribute to canon, though I suppose it does indirectly bring money into CG's coffers.

Cent, I would argue that you do rate a ribbon of some sort. You painted up a mini in a canon scheme for company use, AND it got published. Double whammy. I could see expanding the ribbons to include something like Canon Contributor: Support (or what have you) if you're having difficulty deciding how to recognize those in the Acknowledgements and Playtesters/Proofers/Fact Checkers sections.

I agree with this -- though, like with the others Canon Contributor ribbons, there should a set of standards in order to qualify. I think being listed in the credits of a product sould be the biggest requirement/

But let's get the first two Canon Contributor ribbons set up and the kinks worked out before we start expanding the ribbon pool....

Craig
(Though I will award anyone who kills this "Invalid Session. Please resubmit the form." 2 ribbons....)
