ideas for the next art contest...

Post by AVA MANGO TWO » Mon Jan 19, 2009 7:38 pm

I was thinking it would be pretty cool to do a art contest based upon a nose art theme in the not to near distant future, what do ya'll think also post up a few original ideas if you can. :) zac
ps: the nose art theme could even be fun for a future miniature painting contest hmmm....

Sounds like a great idea to me Zac. Now if I could only figure out a way to get our participation levels up…

A good camera beats a scanner any day.

As for participation levels, offer food as a prize? that seems to work for my residents :)

I have to agree here as i also dont own a scanner and take all my artwork that i want to post or keep on file with my old camera, as for art contest participation levels i think your just got to keep at it and sooner or later your start to get more members interests.

As for prizes to get members to enter contests ive always been against this idea simply because entering a contest should be for fun and something you should have enjoy doing, dont get me wrong prizes are always cool but we should'nt have to bribe any of our members with prizes to enter the contests that we hold. We are lacking in funds at the moment so the only prizes we can offer would be donated privately, but in time as soon as funds have been reastablished and we have some spare change we will be looking at offering them out again... :) zac

While nose art hit its high artform on bombers especially american in ww2 its not where it started. Fighters in ww1 had eyes evil smiles etc and to be honest the infamous tiger smile or shark mouth of the flying tigers was unit nose art! Let alone the sponsored tanks of soviet forces covered with slogans! But to be honest this is a contest I could see doing. Anyone for a pin up gal with a nambu or sunbeam laser pistol? Lol

I like the idea.
If anybody wants visual inspiration just google; Alberto Vargas. or
Joaquin Alberto Vargas Y Cuavez. He was the main man during the war years, and is still held as the best.

Well that theme might be a bit confusing because I for one don't know what you're talking about. ;)

The nose art idea is kinda cool, but how many mechs would it really work on? Most mechs don't have noses, it's mostly just the chicken walkers that would apply and of course the aerospace fighters but I would assume that most people prefer mechs. Could be wrong.

As for themes, hell just throw out a catch phrase and there you go. Many possibilities. ie:

Invasion!
(could be clans stomping across a field, a warship fleet headed insystem, mechs dropping through the atmosphere, some general mech attack theme)

Last Stand!
(death of a legend, could be Jaime Wolf, Aidan Pryde, Natasha Kerensky, or just some random guy about to die?? The unknown hero sort of thing)

Mech Overhaul!
(Take a favourite mech, and draw a IIC or a Mark II or a Reseen version of said mech. Like "I'm going to do a reseen Awesome" or a "Mark II Dire Wolf" or whatever)

3050s Pinup!
(as above, maybe draw a pin-up poster of a gal (or guy) in the battletech timeframe and try to make it suit the universe).

Get out of your mech!
(non-mech themes? Infantry? Tanks? Aerospace? Mechwarriors in the barracks?)

...And into the Action!
(just an action shot. No static shots, but has to be some combat. Damage optional (might be harder for the 3d boys)).

Anyway. Some quick and dirty ideas.

Nose art is just a generic term for art applied to a vehicle as a name. It was an artform that came to prominance during WWII as a type of moral booster. It does not have to be on the "nose" of the vehicle.

Debatable. Nose art is commonly attributed solely to aircraft, whether located on the nose or elsewhere. The soviet tank slogans are no more nose art than the names on individual british tanks I would venture. So by "vehicle" it really should be "aircraft". Though in battletech this has been broadened to mechs in some cases.

As an art contest I think it would alienate some of the members participating, since some people can't draw and instead rely on 3d programs. Creating just "nose art" or worse nose art on a mech in a 3d program will probably mean those people would not enter.

Such a theme would probably work well for the miniature painting contest however, as already mentioned.

i use vehicle here because in many military sci fi games and books, nose art is on things other than aircraft.......eg: the combat cars and tanks in the "Hammer's Slammers" series by David Drake and some actual M1 Abrams nose art that lasted a few months after the 1st gulf war. and i was thinking more of a mini contest for this....but an art contest would work. nose art does not have to be pretty girls(or guys! we know deathstrike!!)

Sorry guys, I guess I may need to step down as art director. I've been so busy with work and school that I don't even have time for my family - let alone BTU... :(
