2011's Winter Art Contest - Time Of Vote

Post by shalom itay » Sat Jan 22, 2011 7:23 am

Hello to all!

After much hard work by the membership, we are proud to present the
fine BT art that composes this winter's contest.

The theme of this contest is "Battle Field Aftermath".

The rules:

1. The voting will last 14 days and will end at 05/02/2011 (Feb 5th).
2. Voters should be registered BTU's members for 3 months, prior to the start of voting (i.e 22/01/11).
3. The 3-point-system for rating will be used (1st - 3 points, 2nd - 2 points, 3rd - 1 point),
and the voter must rate 3 entries, no less no more.

Now, this is more of a request then a rule, but if each voter could write a positive description of why he choose to vote for each picture -
This will be highly appreciated.

And now for the submissions (presented in the order received):

1st: Entry 4: I like the realness of it.

2nd: Entry 2: I can see this happening on any battle field, innocence inner twined with death.

3rd: Entry 1: A rough field report for a report, realistic.

Entry 3 is realy well done, but it doesn't suggest an aftermath to me as it is all so clean.

3 points - #2 I like the idea behind it... relic of war meets playful innocence of the next generation. Life moves on...
2 points - #1 A field sketch - great idea and I think it captures the spirit of "aftermath" from a new perspective.
1 point - #4 Yep, aftermathy... you can smell the destruction

Well done everyone. =) #3 is very good. I just like a little more grit in my aftermath chowder.

#1 Entry 2
#2 Entry 4
#3 Entry 3

Had a hard time between 2 and 4 they both have great aspects about them and not so great (more great than not). I finally decided #2 since its cleaner and more professional looking.

Entry 3 looks good (love the Mech) but doesn't fit the theme very well.

Entry 1 was a very novel idea but the writing ( minefield and arrows) really threw it off for me.

I'll go:

1st choice - entry #4 - I'd like a bit more damage to the trees and surroundings but those damaged mechs are great! The mech in the foreground almost looks like it was reaching out for help before it died! Well done!

2nd choice - entry #2 - It reminded me of a destroyed mech on a long lost battlefield somewhere in the Periphery. Now it is a kid's playground! It needs something to give it a bit more but I am not sure what. As it is, I like it for the contrast between war machine, the growing field, and the children playing. Well done!

3rd choice - entry #3 - it is well done but I found it tough to decide between #1 and #3. Neither really jumped out and said "there was a battle here" Both could have been the aftermath of some natural disaster or human made disaster and not war. Both were interesting and I like them but it came down to #3 being without the writing to explain it.

2 - 1st
4 - 2nd
3 - 3rd

I really like Entry 2. I've done a few diorama's myself with kids or sometimes cows mulling around an old battlefield hulk. I've always liked the idea of kids playing on spent military surprise. Well, the kind that won't blow up on them. :)

First Place - #4 - Though this piece is a bit rough, it has a consistently style to it which I like and really looks like the aftermath of a battlefield.

Second Place - #2 - I like the concept, probably the only reason it came in second is because visually the mech doesn't quite match the background. Though I'm sure that was due to lack of time. It might've been cool to push this concept a bit more and have the rifleman overgrown a bit with vegetation suggesting it's been there a considerable length of time.

Third Place - #3 - Probably the most "professional" looking of the four, I'd only rank it third because I don't think it quite explores the theme to the degree that it should. Otherwise pretty top notch.

Honourable Mention - #1 - This is a cool concept, and not one that I would've expected or thought of myself. However I don't the artist quite pulled it off. Personally I might've liked to see sort of more data and presented in a more technical way. So either with a computer font or block letters? You could have things like location, time, casualty count, units lost, that sort of thing. Maybe you could put it in the perspective of say a technical readout for a battlefield commander, or maybe even something like aerial photography from a local reporter (ie news helicopter). That sort of thing. I give this guy props for original thinking though.

Either way some pretty cool entries. I thought of entering this contest myself however I just didn't have the time. Was busy with christmas, work and doing some artwork for some friends of mine. Personally I wouldn't mind if these art contests were more regular (like quarterly). Prize or no prize. There's something to be said for too much too soon, but contrary to that is also the idea of regular contests to get people in the rhythm of doing them.

3 points - entry 2, this one is a classic!
2 points - entry 4, this picture looks almost "alive".
1 point - entry 1, I like the postcard style of this work.

Entry is 4 is a superb work of art fit for a CatLab book,
however I think that the emphasis is to much on the Mech,
and less on the battlefield aftermath, i.e the brunning city.
